Online shopping

David, a PCS member from Sheffield, has suggested that we recommend on-line shopping in our Waste Not Want Not food topic. He and his colleagues at HMRC have found that shopping online it's much easier to buy just what you need, and to avoid getting drawn into BOGOFs and the like. David also reckoned that a delivery van servicing many households must be more efficient than everyone driving to the supermarket. Research shows that this is generally true, provided that the online shopping is actually replacing a car journey.

This is all very well if you like to do your shopping at supermarkets who have a delivery service. Given the choice, I like to walk or cycle to the shop to buy my shopping. Of course, the retail Maharajah's would like to maximise their profits even more. What about secondary mileage done by vans breaking down? Buying from supermarkets by design means more waste due to expiry dates and their ridiculous interpretation. BOGOF indeed...
