Two years ago, my partner and I moved into our current house in Sheffield. I’ve been taking occasional meter readings since then, to keep an eye on the electricity and gas we are using, and I now know that In the last 12 months, we’ve used 11% less electricity than we used in the previous year. We can put the electricity cut down to just two things. Firstly, we have now changed all the light bulbs in our house for lower energy options. It took a bit of time and thought, but now it’s all done. Second, we borrowed a smart electricity meter from our library, to help us see where we use the most power. The big shock was the electric shower, which uses over 7kw when running (3 times more juice than the kettle). We still use it of course, but are just that bit more careful with it. We’ve also had a water meter fitted (that’s going to save us £100+ every year) so there is a double incentive to keep showers short. Current monthly electricity bill is £22, so the cut in electricity use should have saved us about £30 a year every year from now on (not allowing for price changes etc)
"I am very impressed with the Action Group pack - not only will it be useful in the context of setting up an action group, but also to influence those not particularly interested in climate change.
