CWU youth get active

The CWU Eastern Regional Youth Committee has decided to use its regional education event to run a weekend-long Climate Solidarity training course.  It will open up the event to all the CWU Eastern regional committees, to promote awareness of environmental issues and encourage the formation of Climate Solidarity action groups.

Eastern Regional Youth Secretary, Richard Wilkins is keen that Climate Solidarity be a top priority for the youth committee and the region as a whole.  Richard has been working hard with Climate Solidarity project worker Maeve Kennedy, Eastern Regional Secretary Paul Moffat, and the CWU Education & Training department, to put together what is expected to be a highly successful event.

Richard commented: “When I heard that the CWU had signed up to the Climate Solidarity program I felt that as a committee we could support this important issue in every way possible, but to have the support of Paul Moffat and the whole of the Eastern Region is fantastic. Hopefully this can be the first of many schools run across the CWU to raise awareness of Climate Change and how it is affecting everyone”.

Paul added, “When Richard first broached the subject of holding a joint youth event, I wanted to support the Youth Committee and Climate Solidarity, opening it up to the whole of the Eastern Region as it should be a priority for everyone within the region, the CWU and society. I am very supportive of the regional event and I know that the weekend will be great success; we are hoping that this will be the pilot for all regions to take up the opportunity of holding such weekends to highlight Climate change and step up to Climate Action Groups across the CWU. My thanks to Richard for sowing the seeds for the event, together with the Regional Youth Committee and the Eastern Region. I am looking forward to being in a position to offer everyone a chance to attend the first event of this kind to promote awareness and action for Climate Solidarity".

In addition to a speaker from COIN (Climate Outreach Information Network), the lead partner in the Climate Solidarity project, Richard also hopes to have speakers from both Royal Mail and BT, to explain and answer questions about the environmental policy of each company.  It is anticipated there will be some Climate Solidarity action groups up and running by the time the course takes place and Richard is keen to have an action group leader attend to share their experience of setting up and taking part in a group.

Climate Solidarity project worker, Maeve Kennedy said "From my perspective as Climate Solidarity project worker, it is great to see a motivated youth committee leading the way in their region on such an important issue".  Details of the course and how to book your place, will be sent out shortly, by the CWU Education & Training Dept.  Maeve can be contacted at cwu@climatesolidarity.org.uk or on 07590 245 269

CWU and raising enviroment awarness

The CWU broke new ground on this issue in July last year with a week long CWU and raising enviroment awarness course at their newly refurbished and eco friendly education centre in Oxfordshire. It brought together a very good cross section of CWU activists. We had a good split between regions/postal/telecoms. There was a political officer area safety rep local level safety reps regional safety reps regional project workers and IR reps.
